During the construction of Phase 3 of the Southern Bridge, or construction of the Zemgale direction magistral traffic interchange, a new motorway – Jāņa Čakstes gatve will be built on the left bank of the Daugava river. The new motorway will connect the Southern Bridge with Ziepniekkalna iela and provide magistral access roads to the Southern Bridge in Pardaugava area.
There will be two double level access roads at the traffic interchange:the first two level junction from Jāņa Čakstes gatve and Bauskas iela and the second junction from Jāņa Čakstes gatve and Ziepniekkalna iela.
Due to lack of funding the construction works of Phase 3 of the Southern Bridge were cancelled in 2011.Meanwhile, during the construction works performed in the time period from the conclusion of the agreement until July 2010, a portion of the concrete structures of the Bauskas iela overpass were built, most of the rabbet walls were placed and construction of the small roundabouts was commenced.The lanes of J. Čakstes gatve from Bauskas iela to Ziepniekkalna iela were partially built.The concrete constructions of the pedestrian tunnel were built and supporting walls were partially built.Construction of the by-pass road at the junction of Ziepniekkalna iela was almost completed. It will be necessary for the building of the overpass of Ziepniekkalna iela. 4 small overpasses at Ziepniekkalna iela junction were built as well.
On 14 October 2011, a tender for the completion of the construction works of Phase 3 of the Southern Bridge was announced and on 6 December the bids were submitted. After the results are announced, further actions will be taken
