The Galerija Centrs shopping centre consists of several connected buildings, including the building of the former Centrs department store which has not been changed from the outside. Inside, however, the planning has been adapted to the overall style of the gallery. The final result of the construction of the gallery is a new building and an improved environment.
There are a total of seven properties merged in the gallery. To ensure the harmony of the buildings and avoid mismatches caused by the new structures, fragments of a portal of the old building have been used in the new one. A new street has been created as a result of the construction – Mazā Vaļņu Street.
The new and old buildings are connected by bridges to allow for exploring each floor by walking in a circle. The shape of the building in the new section is the same as in the old one. Several historical artefacts have also been retained – the entrance portal, which dates from 1902, can be seen next to the new gallery building. Historical ceiling lamps have also been preserved – those are placed in the historical zone of Galerija Centrs, next to the main stairs.
